Earl Biss

Earl Biss, Absaroke (Crow), was born in 1947 and was raised by his grandmother in Crow Agency, Montana, and in Yakima, Washington. He started painting at age eight when he was kept indoors by rheumatic fever. When he was sixteen he went to the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. He also studied oil painting at the San Francisco Art Institute, and in several places in Europe.

Biss painted throughout his life; some of his canvases can be seen in museums today, and in many galleries, including the Zuger Gallery in Aspen. After he moved to the Roaring Fork Valley, Biss met and became close to Hunter Thompson, with whom he had much in common. Eventually the two struck a deal: Biss would teach Hunter how to paint if Hunter would teach Biss how to write.

Biss made an untold number of pen-and-ink sketches. These pages hold only a small sample; if you are interested in seeing more of the Flying Dog Arts collection, please contact us.
